Tax / VAT on invoices
You might be here because: “why is there VAT on my invoice” · “do prices include VAT” · “how do I add my VAT number” · “reverse charge invoice” · “sales tax” · “tax ID on my invoice” · “VAT on a crypto payment” · “I’m a business, can I get an invoice without VAT” · “what currency are prices in” · “All prices in USD”
Short answer
Prices are in US dollars, plus VAT or sales tax where it applies. On card payments, in the EU, VAT is added at the rate that applies, unless you are a business that qualifies for the reverse charge (then the invoice shows 0 VAT and a reverse-charge note); crypto payments are charged exactly the US-dollar price shown at checkout, with no VAT added, and no separate VAT invoice is issued for them yet. Tax and invoicing on card payments are handled by the payment processor.
Check first
- Card or crypto? The two are taxed differently (below).
- Where is the customer established? VAT is worked out at checkout from your billing address and, for a business, its VAT number. In the EU, VAT is added at the rate that applies, unless you are a business that qualifies for the reverse charge (then the invoice shows 0 VAT and a reverse-charge note). Where no VAT or sales tax is added, you are responsible for any import VAT, GST or sales tax in your country.
- The invoice itself is in the billing portal: dashboard → Billing → Manage in … portal.
Likely causes and fixes
-
“There is VAT on my card invoice.” Expected in the EU: VAT is added at the rate that applies, unless you are a business that qualifies for the reverse charge. The plan prices on the plan page are before tax.
-
“I paid by crypto and want a VAT invoice.” A crypto payment is charged exactly the US-dollar price shown at checkout; no VAT is added, and we do not issue a separate VAT invoice or a follow-up payment for crypto payments yet. For a VAT question about a crypto payment, email billing@driftstack.dev.
-
“I am a business with a VAT number.” It depends on where your business is established. On a card payment, a VAT number does not always remove VAT: a business that qualifies for the reverse charge is invoiced without VAT and accounts for VAT in its own country; you are responsible for checking that your VAT number is valid. Card checkout asks for your business tax ID (VAT number) and puts it on the invoice. Tax-ID details for card invoices are also kept in the billing portal. To add one after a card payment, email billing@driftstack.dev with your VAT number; a person applies it, and invoices already issued are handled case by case. For a crypto payment, see item 2.
-
“I am outside the EU.” Where no VAT or sales tax is added, you are responsible for any import VAT, GST or sales tax in your own country. The invoice in the portal shows what was charged.
If it still fails
Press Talk to a person in this chat (or open Help) and include your account email, the invoice number and date, your billing country and, if you have one, your VAT number. Corrections to an issued invoice, a wrong billing country and reverse-charge requests are handled by a person; the assistant cannot see or change invoices.
